SaferTrader are rolling out a great new scheme to help tradespeople get back to work safely – and help their customers to have the confidence to call and book jobs with them.

The training and safety firm realised that there is a big gap between Government guidelines and how people understand them and that tradespeople have no way to prove to their customers that they are Covid Secure and have read, understood and will apply the guidance.

SaferTrader’s Steve Window told us “We found that many customers were scared to call in a tradesperson because they were worried about Covid, or about the rules around working. This meant that the traders were not getting the jobs and the customers not getting the work done.”

SaferTrader developed a simple online training and toolkit, with guidance and easy to use documents, that helps traders understand the rules around being Covid Secure and how to make them work in real life.

One kitchen fitter who was an early buyer of the SaferTrader Toolkit said “we had some information from the Government, but to be honest it was one-size-fits-all. What I needed was training about Covid safety, and how to put it to work for me. That’s what Safer Trader has got right – it really works for me and my customers are so happy to be able to go ahead with work they need doing. Safer Trader enables me to prove I am Covid Secure and that I will keep my customers safe.”

SaferTrader told us that they hope the UK’s 1million+ traders, mostly self-employed, will get new confidence about Covid secure working from the toolkit – and use it to put customers’ minds at rest, and to start leaving the money worries of the last few weeks behind.

So what IS the law then?

There has been – you may have noticed – a lot of fuss about Mr. Cummings and his trip. He says he didn’t break the law and some senior Government figures support him.

If you actually look at the law (here it is folks)- https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2020/350/regulation/6/made -it would be easy to think he did.

There is a list of things that count as ‘reasonable excuse’ to be out of your home. What Mr. Cummings did isn’t on that list. There may be some wriggle room… but if someone at the heart of Government can be in a grey area (or is he?) what about the rest of us?

There’s a lot of guidance out there. Guidance isn’t law. Should people going back to work be like the senior politicians and commentators now – unsure of what’s right and what isn’t?

Safer Trader Ltd has cut through the confusion and given you, the tradesperson, a toolkit to get it right. Maybe the Government should have done it, but we waited long enough.

It’s OK Government, we did it for you.

If you are sure, your customers can be sure. Never mind the confusion in the messaging, get trained, get it right, get back to work safely.

Rougue bosses bending back-to-work rules? What if you’re self employed?

so… we are all wrestling with how to be safe at work in the Covid world. A million questions about money, childcare, infection, vulnerability…. one big group of workers is the self employed.

If you’re self employed and working in other people’s houses – cleaner, plumber, fitter, whatever – do you know what your responsibilities are? There’s lots of debate about what ‘the boss’ should do. If you ARE the boss, of just you or maybe a small team, where do you go to get it right?

The Government put out some guidance https://www.gov.uk/guidance/working-safely-during-coronavirus-covid-19/homes which helps – but the customer won’t know how well you have taken this on board.

Can you tell them you understand the rules, have a plan, and have done a proper Risk Assessment?

There’s more to being Covid Secure than just putting PPE on. And if you are doing it properly, following the rules and reassuring your customers, are you at an advantage against your competitors who may, or may not, be getting it right?

Have a look around our site, think about getting the training and how it will help you feel confident about making your customers confident.

Essential work?

Hi – take a look at this article, if you are a tradesperson working in people’s homes:

It is a good article, from a really reputable organisation that clearly takes the safety of its people and customers seriously. Couple of points though – it is still talking about ‘essential work’, and it doesn’t mention ‘risk assessment’Fact: as long as the work can be done safely, and proper consideration is given to the vulnerability of the household, ‘essential work’ isn’t really something you HAVE to think about. Fact: Risk Assessment is a legal requirement – each job should be considered on its own merits, rather than have a blanket set of rules.

Safer Trader can help.
